It’s About the Heart

There was a recent sermon given at Austin Stone Church in Austin, TX.  Part of the sermon included a story about the pastor’s daughter.  She went over to a friend’s house and saw that her friend had a poster with stickers on it.  She asked her about it and her friend told her that whenever she does something good she gets a sticker put on the poster and when she gets a certain number of stickers she gets a prize.  Well the pastor’s daughter came home and wanted to have a poster too.  Her parent’s agreed and quickly realized that their little girl was doing good things just to get the reward not because she wanted to in her heart.  It became about doing not the heart.  One night her dad covered the entire poster board with stickers, even the lines.  The  next morning the little girl woke up and she saw that the poster board was completely covered up.  She was so excited!  She went to her dad and asked him what happened.  She knew that she did not get all the stickers by herself.  He sat her down and said “Your daddy gave these to you because he loves you and because he wants you to have it all because he loves you not because you did good”.

When we realize that we aren’t “good enough”, we discover how PERFECT God is, our Father.  He loves us so much that He wants us to have every sticker even went we haven’t earned them.  When we understand that He gave it all we love Him, we want to show Him our love, and we want to do good.  We can never be “good enough” and do everything right, but it’s not about what we do it’s about why we do it.  If our heart is for the Lord and filled with Him and Him alone then everything we do is for Him to glorify His name.
